After all the debates and hand-wringing, L.A. County has announced that it can not and will not enforce mandatory condom use in porn production in California. According to the Chief of the county’s Public Health Department, it would just be too difficult and expensive to try to police an industry that’s so fragmented. Public Health officials passed the buck to the state legislature, but as the L.A. Times notes, “not a single California lawmaker has been willing to sponsor such legislation.”

While interviewing Belladonna at the Adult Entertainment Expo, I asked her what she thought about the idea of condom mandates and her answer captured the ambivalence many performers and producers feel about the topic.

Tommy Gunn Interview

Tommy Gunn is a veteran woodsman with hundreds upon hundreds of scenes and over a dozen awards under his belt. Women love him and men want to be him. When I could out that he’d made a 3-D choose-my-adventure porno, I knew I had to interview him.

Tommy’s new movie is called Cummin’ At You! 3D and incorporates some pretty interesting elements that have rarely, if ever, been tried in adult film before. Read on for a behind-the-scenes perspective on 3-D porn, dual POV and choosing your own sexual adventure from the director and star himself.

Tommy, you’ve been in the business for about 5 years now, right? When did you get the idea to do a 3-D movie?

I’ve actually been in the biz 6 yrs going on 7, can you believe it! I got the idea about a year and a half ago after meeting a mainstream action stunt choreographer who also had a lot of interest in 3D and adult entertainment…I thought 3D could give our industry the boost that it needs.

Can you describe the camera you used to shoot the movie? Did it present any special challenges for you?

Let’s just say it was a “special rig”…I’d like to keep that top secret to be honest with you. It was definitely custom rigged for shooting 3D POV, a first in our industry. It was fashioned together by our tech guy who’s and an authority on 3D technology and its applications.

The movie also includes another fun element: Choose-My-Adventure. The closest thing that currently exists are the “interactive” DVDs that usually focus on one girl. How does Cummin’ At You! 3D differ from those?

For Cummin’ At You 3D I decided to give the users, male and female, more options. First, they get to choose their point-of-view be it mine or Sindee’s then the fun really begins and the users “adventure” is up to them…keep it simple with one-on-one action or choose to add Riley, Tony or both! OR for those that want to sit back and enjoy I’ve also included an “adventure randomizer”. This movie appeals to a broader audience, making everyone VERY happy.

Shooting the movie from both your perspective and SinDee Jennings’ was an interesting choice. Do you think that as a performer with plenty of Female fans you are more in tune to the female porn market?

I’m not sure if I’m in tune to the female market, per say… but I realize women are watching more and more and so are the gay men…so I didn’t wanna leave anyone out so to speak. I figured I’d offer both POVs to maximize our audience.

SinDee herself is a well-known squirter. What can viewers expect from her in 3-D?

Well she’s a sweetheart of a girl with amazing girl-next-door qualities and her ability to squirt really showcases the 3D effect to its fullest. I guarantee viewers will be ducking in reaction when she squirts. It’s so realistic you have to see it to believe it!

The movie also stars Riley Evans. What does she bring to the table that made her your choice for this video?

The choice was obvious. She’s a natural beauty with a great look–that beautiful blonde hair and great boobs says it all.

To change the subject slightly, you have a great reputation among the girls in the industry and most girls I’ve interviewed have said you’re one of their favorite co-stars to work with. From a viewer’s perspective, you really do seem to bring out the best in your partners. What’s your philosophy when it comes to performing and how you treat the girls?

My philosophy is to make the girl feel so comfortable and at ease, she simply trusts me and can let herself go, knowing that I will not hurt her. I will treat her with care and respect and make the experience very pleasurable.

When I’ve seen you at the AVN show, you always seem to be having a great time talking to your fans. Do you get a lot of feedback from them on what kinds of movies they want to see you make?

I am blessed that my fans can relate to me and I try to give them what they request and desire, this way I can connect with them and keep them wanting more.

I’m really excited to see “Cummin’ At You! 3D” when it comes out. I’m sure you’re already working on your next project, though. What can we expect from Tommy Gunn coming up?

Actually, I’m already looking into the next installment of “Tommy Gunn’s Cummin’ at you” not to mention a BIG feature that will blend elements of adult with high energy action, the supernatural and the latest in 3D technology. I’m gonna make an entirely new class of Adult productions that fans will always craving to see what’s cummin’ next.

I had the chance to interview Belladonna at the Adult Entertainment Expo in 2009. If you love her movies, you’ll be glad to hear that she’s even more charming, beautiful and intelligent in person. Even I will admit that I was a little starstruck by her.

Bella and I talked about her herpes scare, her upcoming autobiography, how she feels about the “fucked up” things she did when she was younger, rape fantasies and more. Read on for the full interview.

Alison: I actually heard that you were working on an autobiography…

Belladonna: I am, actually, yes. [laughs] It was one of those things I didn’t want to do for a long time because I thought, I don’t want to just write a book about, for example, when I read Jenna’s book, it was like I thought there was going to be so much more in there, you know? And I don’t want to leave anything out. So it might become – I don’t even know if this exists – an autobiography in different volumes, yes, because I think there needs to be a certain volume for each part of my life.

Alison: Sure, I mean, and you’re not dead, so you’ve got a lot left to go.

Belladonna: Right. [laughs] Is it weird doing an autobiography at 27?

Alison: I don’t think so. You’ve lived what seems to me to be a pretty exciting life.

Belladonna: Really, my age should be sixty, because I’ve done it all. And I did it at a young age, so maybe that makes up for it.

Alison: Do you think that having done it so young, are there things you would go back and redo?

Belladonna: Yes and no, because you think “Oh, you know, I would’ve done it differently.” But would I be the same person I am today? And I don’t want to not be the same person I am today, so no, I guess.

Alison: So you’re pretty happy with where you are right now?

Belladonna: There’s times where I’m like, “I’m glad I did all that fucked up stuff when I was young because I realize how great it is to not be in that type of scenario. You know?

Alison: You have something to compare it to.

Belladonna: I don’t have to wonder what it would’ve been like if I tried that. I did.

Alison: A while back, you posted on your MySpace that you were leaving the industry over a scare you had had. Are you happy to be back? Do you feel like that changed you in any way or impacted you?

Belladonna: It made me realize – I mean, I was always slowly getting towards being more careful with my body – just really not wanting to put myself in certain situations. But, you know, it taught me a lot. And I think that also, it helped a lot of people outside the industry an insight on how, you know, this shit happens. And this is what it feels like and you’re not alone. There’s tons of people who have herpes, you know?

Alison: It’s a lot of stigma.

Belladonna: It is. And you know what? It’s something that people should be comfortable talking about, asking questions about. But I also don’t work as much as I used to. I’m very particular about who I’m with and what tests I get. So I think that should set an example for everyone in the industry to be like, “Just because we do this, it doesn’t mean we can’t be careful, healthy people,” you know? And be safe!

Alison: So who is on your list? Who do you like to work with these days?

Belladonna: Okay, I’ll tell you all the girls and the guys. There’s a lot. Girls that I love to work with are girls that get wet, girls that you can watch get turned on. Because – I don’t know if anyone else knows this – but when a girl’s turned on, her pussy gets wet. [laughs]

Alison: [laughs] I’ve heard that rumor.

Belladonna: It’s like why is this such a mystery, you know? I can literally, on two of my hands, show the amount of girls that I’ve been with that actually get wet. Out of hundreds, you know? Alison: [Holding hands like Bella's] Is that about right?

Belladonna: [laughs] It’s that big! But, you know, I wouldn’t want to sleep with that every day, but I definitely want to play with it sometimes.

Alison: On our site [VideoBox], when we release scenes that are a little more rough or intense, there’s a feeling amongst some of our members that the women really aren’t enjoying themselves and I feel like you probably have a really interesting take on that.

Belladonna: Here’s the thing: when you see something that you’ve never put yourself in that type of situation before, then it’s really hard for you to understand. I think there’s a lot of people out there that like to fantasize and roleplay and even though they know it’s not reality. I know hundreds of girls who fantasize about being raped. Because they know it’s not real. They’re actually choosing the person that they want to live out the fantasy with. And that’s where they don’t understand that. There’s a lot of guys that don’t like to be rough with girls, too. In porn. Who are just like, “I’m not into it.” But you know, when people are put together and they’re both there because they want to be there, whatever they want to do should be okay as long as they’re happy about it – as long as they do it safely. . So you’ve got to understand that if you’ve never tried it before then you really can’t be the best judge of that.

Alison: That’s true. Speaking of which, how do you sort of go into a scene? What do you think beforehand? What do you talk to your partner about before you guys start?

Belladonna: I guess it just depends on who it is. But most of the time, it’s very casual. It’s like, ah, you know, the month before I booked them for the scene I’m like, you know I get to choose who I want to be with. And then the day they get there, I’m flirty and I flirt with them because I love to flirt and it starts really naturally even off camera. And then I just love watching them enjoy me no matter what I’m doing to them. And pleasing them is like, “ah.” A dream come true.

Alison: Is that your favorite part of your job?

Belladonna: [sighs] There’s so many favorites. I love being able to please people. I love seeing the expression on their face. I love giving them the time of their lives. And also giving myself the exploration sex. I like traveling the world, I like roleplaying, I get to shoot in all different locations. So many favorites about this job. And I’ve actually literally grown up on camera. My sexuality grew up on camera. I knew nothing when I got in the business.

Alison: It’s almost like an autobiography itself.

Belladonna: It is! It’s a video biography, right?

Joanna Angel Interview

In more ways than one, Joanna Angel isn’t your average porn star. Instead of simply aspiring to get a lot of tattoos, dye her hair pink and make money having sex on camera, Joanna decided to go into business for herself and became not just a starlet, but a director and CEO as well.

While getting her degree in Engligh Literature at Rutgers University, she decided to start her own website, BurningAngel.com, and has remained at the helm of the company for over 7 years of hot alt-porn goodness. Suicide Girls may have done it first, but Burning Angel did it better.

Alison: What do you think of the term “alt-porn”? Does it describe what you do, or do you think it’s a term reserved for that guy who makes “really awful, pretentious pornos”?

Joanna: LOL hahahaha this made me smile =)

I think the term alt-porn was a very positive term- then that guy turned it into something very ugly- but now I think it is become a good term again. I think what alt porn really means- is porn that reflects the alternative culture- with a community. A lot of people join BurningAngel and become friends with one another- and the girls, become friends with each other- its more than just a quick way to make money for the girls and it’s more than just something to jerk off to and then hide for the members. Does that make sense?

A: For sure. Do you think that your audience specifically likes your and the other Burning Angel girls’ look because they themselves are tatted/pierced or are you and your ilk exotic to them?

J: I think it is a mixture of both. I think there are a lot of members who are just like me- and there are a lot of members who always dreamed of seeing a girl with tattoos naked and just weren’t sure where to go. We welcome all of them!

A: When you’ve met your fans at shows, do they tend to be in your age group?

J: Yeah! My fans usually tend to be in my age group- and they also tend to be really nice. Most of them seem like people I would hang out with. It’s really refreshing. I may not have the most amount of fans at every convention- but I definitely have the coolest fans. I think they are awesome.

A: On a different note, do you think that the problems with piracy and the proliferation of free porn affect you and your niche as much as the more mainstream studios? are your fans more or less likely to go out of their way to support you/your work?

J: I think the bad economy affects my company negatively more so than the tube sites. I don’t think the majority of the BA members are looking for a quick fix- and they really do enjoy supporting us. If they have the money- they will gladly pay for a membership- even though they could probably find some of their favorite videos on the website on those tube sites. As I said before- there is more to a BA membership than just being able to watch a few videos. We have always appealed to a younger, and less affluent demographic of people than most other porn companies – so the downfall of the economy has hurt us more than anything else. It’s not that our members are leaving the site to look at free porn- they are leaving the site because they don’t have jobs. It doesn’t worry me that much because the economy will bounce back at a certain point- but the tube sites will be there forever.

A: Okay, what was your first tattoo of? When/why did you get it?

J: My first tattoo is on my left shoulder it is a mask- it says “so it goes” underneath it. I got it because my favorite book at the time was Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut – and it says “so it goes” over and over again in that book.

A: The stereotype about mainstream porn stars is that they’re blonde bimbos with fake tits. Do you think you’re also stereotyped as a girl with lots of tattoos?

J: I mean- I am a girl with a lot of tattoos so I don’t mind being stereotyped like that! But yeah- I am that stereotype. People also always assume that because I have tattoos that I am really though, and I am like, a Dom- and I take pleasure out of talking shit and hurting people. That is not the case!

A: You just started a new publication called Burning Angel Magazine. What inspired you to get into print?

J: It’s something I wanted to do for a long time…. I just wasn’t sure how to go about doing it. A friend of mine named Dan at Magma Publishing approached me with the idea and had the means to make it happen so- we made it happen! I think that these days you really have to do everything if you want to stay afloat. You just have to take advantage of any means possible to get your name out there.

A: Do you know where fans can find the magazine on sale?

J: It is in the store on BurningAngel.com and it is also on magazine stands everywhere.

A: So, I read in your blog that you and James Deen had a hot threesome (and then foursome) with an unnamed girl and Steve Holmes in Vegas this year. Is that a common occurrence for you guys?

J: Alright- I will admit- the unnamed girl was Stoya…. who I can name now. I had her permission! So go tell all your friends. I wouldn’t say that happens every day in the James Deen and Joanna Angel household but it happens every once in a while. It’s nice.

A: Sweet. It seems like you mainly hang out with other “alt” porn girls (for lack of a better term), but you are friends with Jenna Haze and Jesse Jane. Are they the exception to the rule or have you made many friends in the mainstream porn ranks?

J: I really have no problems with girls in mainstream porn- I have made a lot of good friends in the industry and really we are essentially all on the same page. We all fuck on camera- whether we fuck on camera and have blond hair and fake boobs or we fuck on camera and are covered in tattoos- we are all out there in a certain way that other people aren’t so we all kinda have a bond. I always seem to get along with people who are passionate about what they do. I never seem to enjoy to company of girls who are just all about the quick money – regardless if they are in alt porn or not. Jenna Haze is a filthy whore on and off camera and I totally love her for it- she is just a fun genuine person and I like that quality in everyone. And like- how could you not love Jessie Jane? I mean, no- she’s not a BurningAngel girl- but she is just like, one big crazy sex cheerleader and it’s totally adorable. Besides- its really nice to have friends that are different than you.

A: You seem to like what you like and not worry *too* much about how punk it is (for example, your Escalade). Do your fans ever criticize the way you dress or the things you buy?

J: Some people have given me shit for buying an Escalade but I don’t really care. I love that car- and I really did need a big car to cart around equipment for shoots and stuff- and like- what was I supposed to get? A mini- van? Besides- you look at any “hipsters” profile on myspace and it says that they listen to like the Wu-Tang and Lil’ Wayne- I guess I just took the irony to the next level hahahaha. I have been going to punk shows since I was like 14 years old- I’m 28, I have pink hair, and a bunch of tattoos… I’m my own boss- I mean, if someone wants to question my punkness then I just don’t care. I am way past the point of needing to prove myself in that department.

A: Unlike most porn stars (and porn CEOs) , you talk about your real life and the people you fuck in your blog. Has that been a largely positive experience for you?

J: Yes definitely- I think it’s part of the reason why I have such awesome fans who are kinda like my friends- it’s because they really are living my life with me!

I did an interview with the absolutely delightful Lexi Love at the AVN show this year and I just posted it over at the VideoBox Blog. Here’s a short excerpt:

Alison: When did you start in porn? What were you doing beforehand?

Lexi: I was waiting tables and going to school. I actually dropped out of college to go do porn.

Alison: Really?

Lexi: Yeah, I was going to school for chemical engineering and I decided that this was much more fun. [laughs]

Alison: I can imagine. I mean, not that chemical engineering probably isn’t a lot of fun…

Interview with Jenna Haze

This is my interview with Jenna Haze at the Adult Entertainment Expo in January. She’s extremely nice and just as beautiful in person as she is in her movies. We talked about her busy life, who she does her best scenes with, how her directing career is coming along and more.

Alison: How’s the convention going so far, Jenna?

Jenna: It’s good, it’s really good.

A: Have you done a lot of signings, met a lot of fans?

J: Yes, I signed for six hours yesterday and I’ve already signed for almost four hours today and I’ve got another three, so…

A: You must be pretty tired.

J: No, I’m used to it.

A: You really seem like the consummate porn star. You bring everything to your scenes every time. How do you do it?

J: [laughs] It just comes naturally. I like my job and when the camera rolls I do my thing.

A: What are your favorite things to do in your scenes?

J: Since I was under contract for so long doing only girls, now doing guys is the best. Of course, sucking cock. Anal scenes are probably my little niche – my favorite thing to do, besides blowjobs.

A: Who do you really like to work with?

J: Guys or girls?

A: Hmm. Guys.

J: James Deen, Johnny Sins, Manuel Ferrara, all yummy yummies.

A: Basically, the guys with the biggest dicks.

J: Pretty much [laughs]. I like the big ones. And Scott Nails, how could I forget Scott Nails?

A: How about girls?

A: When doing a girl-girl scene, some performers really get into their scenes and get wet and some don’t. Is it important to you that your partner likes women?

J: Yeah, definitely. It’s always good to see that they’re really excited and really into it. Wetness is always a plus, right? Dry is not sexy.

A: How many years have you been doing porn now?

J: Seven and a half

A: And you’re not sick of it at all?

J: I have my times when I get a little burned out on work in general, not necessarily the work I’m doing. Just because I’m directing now and doing my own stuff, I’m also working for other people, I’m also feature dancing, I’m also doing my website and doing signings and stuff.

A: When do you sleep??

J: I don’t! I’ve been trying to be good and get like six hours sleep every night while I’m here, you know, but you know Vegas.

A: How do you like directing so far?

J: It’s hard. It’s really hard. A lot harder than I thought it was gonna be. It’s definitely going to be a learning process for me.

A: Do you think that since you’ve been performing for so long, you bring something special to directing?

J: I’m hoping to bring something special to directing. Once I get all my nervousness and second-guessing myself out of the way, you know. In the first movie I directed there was a lot of, “Is this hot? I don’t know. Should I shoot that? Is that good enough? Are they gonna like that? I don’t know What should I do?” So the first one was definitely very good for my first one, but I expect it to just get better and better.

A: What kind of movies do you really want to make?

J: Just hot movies. Movies of people having real sex. You know, I don’t want fake orgasms and all that stuff, I just want real sex. Gonzo, you know. Just get to the point.

I want to do a variety of stuff though. I want to do gonzo stuff, I want to do vignettes, I’ll probably never do features, it’s just not my thing. But I also want to do stuff that’s really different, really arty, really edgy.

A: When do you think you want to start getting into the really arty stuff?

J: Hopefully soon. “Cum-Spoiled Sluts” was my first movie and will be my signature series, I think. And then I’m doing my anal movie second, and then my next one will be the arty movie.

A: That sounds like fun. Is it fun getting to come up with your own ideas for movies?

J: It’s fun, but it’s also very expensive and so much work! I never realized there was so much to directing. I thought, “Oh you turn the camera on and you just tell them what you want to see and they go.” But there’s really a technique to it and I feel lucky because I have my boyfriend Jules [Jordan] to teach me. Hopefully he’ll teach me everything he knows and I’ll become the best female director in the business. [laughs]

A: I have no doubt that if that’s your goal, you’ll do it. Is it nice being with someone who’s also in the industry who understands what it’s like?

J: I would definitely never date anyone outside the business because there’s too much drama, too much headache, too much difficulty and I’m not changing what I do for anybody.

A: That’s great. You know, after this long in the business, you have a lot of devoted fans who probably know a lot about you. Is there anything you think they’d be surprised to find out?

J: I don’t know. People ask me this question a lot and I’m so much “me” on camera that I feel like I’m known to all of my fans. I always just say that I’m a dork. People don’t realize what a nerd I really am and how clumsy I really am. I fell down some stairs, actually, before I came here. So yeah, I have my moments. [laughs]

A: Well, Jenna, it was so nice talking to you. Enjoy the rest of the show.

J: Thanks, you too.
